德国高级文理中学具有大学预科的性质，其必修与选修课程分为基础课程和专长课程两类。进入文理中学的高年级阶段，授课方式采取课程制，也就是学生可以依据其喜好与发展方向自由选择学习课程与重点科目，以此作为进入大学院校的准备。必修课程通常分为语言、文学、艺术、社会科学、数学、自然科学、宗教、体育等，选修课程通常为大学各学科的基础课程或入门课程，学生必须选修两门以上的专长课程。
